Heads of 42 election management bodies worldwide gathered at the India International Conference on Democracy and Election Management (IICDEM) 2026 in Bharat Mandapam. The high-level plenary session focused on discussing global challenges in election administration. India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar led the proceedings, with the participation of international delegates and leaders from various countries.
The forum provided a platform for senior figures in electoral authorities and diplomatic representatives to engage in strategic discussions on democracy and election management issues. Participants shared experiences, addressed common hurdles, and explored solutions to evolving threats like misinformation and technological disruptions. Emphasis was placed on the importance of international cooperation to maintain the integrity of elections globally.
India, as the chair of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance in 2026, presented thematic priorities aligned with the conference’s focus on democracy for an inclusive, peaceful, and sustainable world. The priorities included innovation in electoral practices, capacity building for election bodies, and partnerships to address contemporary challenges. The conference aims to promote best practices and mutual learning among electoral stakeholders from over 70 countries.
