The Union Health Ministry has heightened surveillance measures in response to a Hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship. Collaborating with national and international health agencies, including the National Centre for Disease Control and the World Health Organisation, the ministry is closely monitoring the situation. Eight probable cases of Hantavirus infection have been identified on the vessel, with five cases already confirmed through laboratory tests.
Three deaths have been reported following the outbreak, which is linked to the Andes strain of Hantavirus known for limited human-to-human transmission. Although the risk of global spread is currently deemed low due to the virus’s transmission requirements, health authorities remain cautious. The virus’s long incubation period raises concerns about potential additional cases among passengers and crew members still under observation.
The World Health Organisation is leading the international response efforts under the International Health Regulations mechanism. Coordinated measures include enhancing diagnostic support, conducting epidemiological assessments, and ensuring safe disembarkation and travel arrangements for those onboard. Two Indian nationals are among the passengers, both asymptomatic and monitored according to international health protocols.
In response to the evolving situation, the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre and the National Centre for Disease Control have conducted a high-level review meeting to assess the outbreak and readiness measures. The Union Health Ministry emphasizes vigilance and close coordination with global health partners, including the WHO, to safeguard Indian citizens’ health and well-being.
