Heavy monsoon rains have pounded various parts of Maharashtra in the past 24 hours, leading to severe waterlogging, swollen rivers, and casualties related to the weather. Palghar district received the highest rainfall in the state, with a staggering 203.3 mm of rain. Thane, Raigad, Mumbai Suburban, and Pune also experienced significant downpours, recording 116.4 mm, 108.7 mm, 90.4 mm, and 70.9 mm of rainfall, respectively.
The intense precipitation has resulted in multiple rivers along the Konkan coast surpassing safety levels. Rivers like Amba, Savitri, and Jagbudi have breached the danger level, while Kundalika and Pinjal rivers have exceeded the warning level. The Maharashtra State Disaster Management Authority confirmed two human fatalities and numerous injuries due to monsoon-related incidents.
In various areas, the heavy rainfall led to tragic events. One person lost their life in a landslide in Satara, while four animals died in a wall collapse. Additionally, one person was struck by lightning in Nandurbar, and tree-falling incidents caused injuries to individuals in Thane and Mumbai. In Palghar, although no human casualties were reported, 11 animals were swept away and perished in floodwaters.
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a Red Alert High Wave Warning for the entire Maharashtra coastline until the night of July 8. The warning predicts rough seas with massive wave surges, with heights ranging from 3.7 to 5.0 meters in different regions. Small vessels and fishing boats have been advised against venturing into the sea, and nearshore recreational activities have been suspended to prevent coastal erosion and wave-related dangers.
