The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted heavy rainfall in several delta districts of Tamil Nadu over the next two days. A low-pressure area in the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify within the next 48 hours. Moderate rainfall is also likely in coastal areas and districts along the Western Ghats on Wednesday due to a developing weather system.
Changing atmospheric conditions are anticipated to result in widespread rain across many regions of Tamil Nadu. The RMC has issued a specific warning for heavy rain in the delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Pudukkottai on Thursday and Friday. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, especially in low-lying and coastal areas susceptible to waterlogging and flooding during heavy rain.
Meteorologists have noted that the low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal remains active and may strengthen further, leading to increased moisture inflow towards the Tamil Nadu coast. This system is expected to enhance wind activity over sea areas, prompting officials to monitor fishing operations and coastal weather conditions closely.
In Chennai, the weather department has forecast moderate rainfall in some parts of the city on Wednesday. Cloudy skies and intermittent showers are expected to offer relief from the prevailing summer heat, although high humidity levels are likely to persist. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has suggested that the southwest monsoon could commence over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by the week’s end.
The onset of the monsoon is a significant event marking the beginning of the annual rainy season in the region. Officials have announced that further updates and district-specific alerts will be issued based on the movement and intensity of the low-pressure system in the upcoming days.
