The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted heavy rainfall in six districts of Tamil Nadu on Sunday. Weather conditions are expected to support widespread showers throughout the state in the upcoming week. An upper-air cyclonic circulation over north Kerala is influencing weather patterns in southern India, leading to increased rainfall activity in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal region.
Isolated places in the hill regions of Tirunelveli district, as well as Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Theni, and Kanniyakumari districts, are likely to experience heavy rainfall and strong winds on Sunday. Southwest monsoon activity over the Western Ghats and nearby areas continues, contributing to the forecasted weather conditions.
Apart from the mentioned districts, moderate rainfall is anticipated in parts of the Western Ghats, the Cauvery delta region, and various areas in northern Tamil Nadu on Sunday and Monday. The prevailing atmospheric conditions are expected to result in intermittent showers across many districts in the state.
The weather department has issued a heavy rain alert for Monday in western and southern Tamil Nadu. Isolated heavy rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds, is expected in the hill areas of Coimbatore district, as well as in Nilgiris, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, and Sivaganga districts. Meteorologists anticipate the current weather system to sustain rainfall activity in Tamil Nadu for at least a week, offering relief from recent hot and humid weather conditions in multiple regions.
Residents in districts under the heavy rain warning are advised to exercise caution, especially in hilly and low-lying areas where waterlogging or localized disruptions may occur. In Chennai, the sky is forecasted to be partly cloudy on Sunday, with moderate rain, thunder, and lightning expected in some areas during the day. While no significant weather warnings have been issued for the capital, occasional showers could alleviate the prevailing heat and humidity.
The weather department is closely monitoring the evolving conditions and recommends the public to stay updated with official forecasts and updates, particularly in districts expected to receive heavy rainfall and strong winds in the next two days.
