Heavy rainfall in Tripura over three days has led to significant damage in agriculture and horticulture, affecting more than 33,000 farmers. The Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister, Ratan Lal Nath, disclosed that the estimated crop loss amounts to Rs 59.17 crore. The state experienced an average rainfall of 133.9 mm from April 27 to 29, with the highest recorded in Kamalpur, Bishramganj, and Khowai districts.
Out of the total 58,540 hectares of standing crops, approximately 6,105 hectares have been impacted by the rainfall, resulting in an expected production loss of 21,635 metric tonnes. South Tripura district suffered the most significant crop loss at 10,470 metric tonnes, while Khowai reported the least at 463 metric tonnes. The government has appointed officials at various levels to execute disaster management plans and deployed Quick Response Teams for prompt action.
State authorities are utilizing geo-tagging technology to evaluate crop damage, with a focus on drainage management to eliminate excess water from fields. Farmers are being encouraged to adopt crop rotation strategies suited to their land conditions, including cultivating pulses, oilseeds, maize, leafy vegetables, and millets. Minister Nath emphasized the government’s dedication to supporting farmers, recognizing their crucial role in the economy and overall state development.
The India Meteorological Department, Meteorological Centre, Agartala, has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in specific districts of Tripura over the next week. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are also expected in certain areas.
