Heavy rainfall is expected to persist in Assam for the next five days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) cautioning about thunderstorms, lightning, and isolated heavy to very heavy rain in various districts. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati reported light to moderate rainfall in most places in Assam over the past 24 hours, with some districts experiencing isolated heavy to very heavy showers. Notably, Beki Road Bridge in Barpeta district recorded the highest rainfall at 15 cm.
The IMD highlighted that the monsoon trough currently stretches from Sri Ganganagar through northern India to Manipur, while upper-air cyclonic circulations over Bangladesh and the adjoining Bay of Bengal are impacting weather conditions in the Northeast, resulting in widespread rainfall. Thunderstorms with lightning are forecasted at isolated spots in Assam, along with heavy rainfall at specific locations. The intensity of rainfall is expected to rise on Tuesday and Wednesday, with heavy to very heavy rainfall anticipated at isolated places in the state.
Similar weather conditions are projected to continue until July 18, with moderate rainfall expected in many areas of Assam and no significant change in maximum temperatures. Residents are advised to stay vigilant as thunderstorms could cause tree uprooting and damage to vulnerable structures, while heavy rain might lead to waterlogging in low-lying regions, disrupt transportation, ferry services, and temporarily affect power supply in some areas. People are urged to avoid seeking shelter under trees or weak structures during thunderstorms and to adhere to official weather alerts.
