Hectic lobbying is underway within the Telangana Congress party for the two Rajya Sabha seats, with numerous senior leaders vying for the nominations. While Abhishek Manu Singhvi is likely to be renominated, the focus is on the selection for the second seat. Several veteran leaders have expressed their interest in the nominations and are actively lobbying in the national capital.
The elections for the two Rajya Sabha seats from Telangana are set for March 16. The terms of the current members, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and KR Suresh Reddy, will conclude on April 9, necessitating the elections. Singhvi, a senior leader, is expected to retain his seat with the support of the Congress high command.
The ruling party, with 66 MLAs in the 119-member Assembly and the backing of allies like the Communist Party of India (CPI) and All India-Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), is in a favorable position to secure both seats. The second seat has generated significant interest within the State unit, with various prominent leaders aspiring for the nomination.
As the deadline for filing nominations is approaching on March 5, a decision on the final candidates is expected shortly. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is anticipated to discuss the matter with top leaders during his upcoming visit to Telangana, where he will also attend a training program for District Congress Committee presidents.
