Veteran actress Hema Malini reminisced about the making of the famous song ‘Kal Ki Haseen Mulaqaat’ from the 1976 film ‘Charas.’ She mentioned how her co-star Dharmendra added his own flair to their performances during the song’s choreography. Hema fondly recalled Dharmendra’s improvisations, especially in the opening sequence of the song.
The actress-turned-politician revealed in an interview that while the song was planned in India, it was actually filmed overseas. Dharmendra, known as Dharam ji, often infused his personal touch into the choreography by introducing his own ideas and expressions. Hema Malini adapted her performance to complement his creative inputs, making their collaboration unique.
Directed by Ramanand Sagar, “Charas” is set against the backdrop of the expulsion of the Indian community from Uganda by dictator Idi Amin in 1972. The film stars Dharmendra, Hema Malini, and other notable actors like Ajit, Amjad Khan, and Sujit Kumar in pivotal roles. The popular romantic duet “Kal Ki Haseen Mulaqat Ke Liye” from the movie was sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, with music composed by Laxmikant–Pyarelal.
Dharmendra and Hema Malini, who have acted together in more than 25 films, have delivered many memorable performances in movies like “Tum Haseen Main Jawaan,” “Seeta Aur Geeta,” and the iconic “Sholay.” Their on-screen chemistry has been cherished by audiences in various successful films throughout their careers.
