The Himachal Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, is working towards achieving over 90% of the state’s energy needs from renewable sources by March 2026. Currently, the state consumes around 13,000 million units of energy annually. Emphasizing on solar energy, the government plans to establish 500 MW of solar power projects within the next two years.
As part of the Green Panchayat Programme, gram panchayats are being actively involved in the installation of 500 kw ground-mounted solar power projects across all panchayats. The initiative has already received approval for setting up solar power plants in 24 gram panchayats, with work underway in 16 panchayats. The overall target is to generate 150 MW of solar power through this program.
Several solar power projects are already operational in Una district. The Pekhubela Solar Power Project has been generating electricity since April 15, 2024, producing 79.03 million units and earning revenue of Rs 22.91 crore. The Aghlour Solar Power Project and the Bhanjal Solar Power Project in the same district have also been contributing to the state’s energy generation.
In the pipeline are three solar power projects with a total capacity of 31 MW in the execution stage, along with four projects totaling 41 MW in the tendering phase. Additionally, a 200 MW solar power plant is set to be established in Kangra district. The state has also installed solar off-grid systems in remote villages like Mud, Langza, Hikkim, and Kaumik.
Under the First Come, First Served policy, solar power projects ranging from 250 kw to 5 MW are being allocated to investors, with the electricity generated to be purchased by the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL). Currently, 547 investors have been allotted projects with a total capacity of 595.97 MW, with Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) already signed for projects totaling 403.09 MW.
HIMURJA has allocated solar power projects totaling 728.4 MW to the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Ltd, including rooftop-mounted solar projects. Of this, 150.13 MW capacity has already been assigned.
