Union Minister J. P. Nadda disclosed that Himanta Biswa Sarma has been unanimously elected as the BJP legislature party leader in Assam, setting the stage for his second consecutive term as Chief Minister. The decision was made during a meeting of newly elected BJP legislators in Guwahati, with central observers from the party leadership present. J.P. Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini were appointed as central observers for the election process.
The announcement of Sarma’s leadership was formalized by Nadda following the unanimous support from legislators. Additionally, the BJP’s coalition partners, Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front, endorsed Sarma for a second term as Chief Minister. Leaders from both parties attended the meeting, expressing confidence in Sarma’s leadership and affirming their commitment to the development of Assam under the NDA alliance.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, who assumed office as Chief Minister in 2021, has emerged as a prominent BJP figure in the Northeast. Initially a senior Congress leader, Sarma transitioned to the BJP in 2015 and played a pivotal role in bolstering the party’s presence in the region. Recognized for expanding the BJP’s political influence in Assam and solidifying alliances with regional parties, Sarma is scheduled to be sworn in as Chief Minister on May 12, alongside his new Council of Ministers.
