Bam Rukn-ud-Daula, a historic lake in Hyderabad, has been reopened to the public following its restoration by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA). The lake, which is over 250 years old and located near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Shivarampally, was inaugurated by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. The restoration project involved clearing encroachments from the lake, which had significantly shrunk over the years.
Originally spanning 104 acres, the lake had dwindled in size, with only 4.12 acres remaining before the restoration efforts. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) had reported its area at 17.05 acres. HYDRAA successfully removed encroachments and restored the lake to its original recorded extent. Additionally, the agency reinforced the existing bund and enhanced the area with amenities like a walking track, open gym, children’s play zones, and gazebos for senior citizens.
Constructed in 1770 during the rule of Sikandar Jah, the third Nizam of Hyderabad, the lake holds historical significance. It was built by the then Prime Minister, Nawab Rukn-ud-Daulah, and named after him. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy highlighted the Telangana government’s 99-day action plan to boost Hyderabad’s development under ‘Praja Palana – Pragathi Pranalika’. He emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring encroached lakes, nalas, and parks to enhance the city’s environment and heritage.
