A distressing hit-and-run incident occurred in Mumbai’s Powai area, where a speeding tempo struck three laborers working along the road and then fled the scene. The victims sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital. Police in Powai have initiated a search for the unidentified driver responsible for the incident.

The incident took place in Morarji Nagar, where laborers were engaged in cleaning activities when a speeding tempo crashed into them. The driver fled without providing any aid to the injured individuals. Authorities have taken the contractor responsible for the laborers into custody for questioning, as investigations continue to determine any safety protocol violations at the work site.

In a separate incident near Thane’s Majiwada junction on May 1, a woman lost her life in a hit-and-run accident. The woman, employed as housekeeping staff, was struck by a tempo while attempting to cross the busy Mumbai–Nashik highway. Despite being rushed to Kalwa Government Hospital, she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Senior Inspector Manjusha Bhongale of Kapurbawdi police station provided this information.

Data from the city traffic police underscores the concerning road safety situation, with hit-and-run incidents accounting for 38% of fatal crashes in Mumbai in 2023. Pedestrians constituted 54% of the victims in these incidents.
