Humayun Kabir, the suspended Trinamool Congress legislator from West Bengal, announced that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has given initial approval for his new political party, Aam Janata Unnyaan Party (AJUP). The party aims to contest in multiple Assembly constituencies in the upcoming state elections. Initially named Janata Unnyaan Party (JUP), the party had to be renamed following the Commission’s advice due to a similar existing party. Despite the initial clearance, the final registration process is still pending, requiring public notices and a waiting period for objections.
The ECI’s approval process for AJUP is expected to take about two weeks, barring any complications. Humayun Kabir’s suspension from Trinamool Congress was linked to his mosque construction plans resembling the Babri Masjid structure. Kabir had officially launched his political party, then called Janata Unnayan Party, and revealed key office-bearers and potential election candidates. He also sought alliances with anti-BJP and anti-Trinamool Congress groups, with limited success beyond discussions with AIMIM led by Asaduddin Owaisi.
