Hundreds of yoga enthusiasts congregated at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington to commemorate the 12th International Day of Yoga. Participants engaged in yoga exercises, stretches, and meditation against the backdrop of iconic landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. The event attracted a diverse crowd, including members of the Indian diaspora, local residents, yoga instructors, and first-time attendees, all embracing the theme of “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” this year.
India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, emphasized the global popularity of yoga, tracing its roots from ancient Indian tradition to a universally embraced practice. Kwatra highlighted that the International Day of Yoga, established in 2014 by a UN resolution with the support of 175 countries, serves as a platform to celebrate India’s rich cultural heritage and promote unity among communities. Participants, including Chief Data Officer Nagesh Borse and yoga teacher Heather Ferris, shared how yoga has positively impacted their lives, promoting physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
The event showcased a variety of yoga postures and breathing exercises led by instructors, with participants immersing themselves in meditation and stretches amidst the scenic beauty of Washington’s monuments. Attendees like Amy Jirapongpisuth, Dilip Jhaveri, and Veronica Caceres expressed how yoga has helped them connect with their inner selves, maintain mental health, and enhance overall well-being. The International Day of Yoga, recognized by the UN General Assembly in 2014, underscores the significance of yoga in promoting health and wellness globally.
