Hybrid marijuana worth Rs 12.50 crore was confiscated at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, leading to the arrest of four individuals. The seizure, believed to be part of an international drug smuggling operation, was made following intelligence inputs regarding narcotics trafficking from Southeast Asia. The contraband, concealed in plastic packets, was discovered during a detailed inspection of passengers arriving from Bangkok.
Officials disclosed that the banned high-grade hybrid marijuana, known for its potency and higher cost compared to regular cannabis, was intended for distribution in major Indian cities. The four detained passengers, with one from Vadodara and three from Punjab, are under investigation to uncover the purpose of the consignment in Gujarat. Preliminary inquiries suggest a growing demand for such substances in Indian urban centers, prompting a wider probe into potential international links and the distribution network.
A case has been filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, with the seized narcotics sent for forensic testing. Authorities are collaborating with central agencies to ascertain any international drug syndicate connections the accused may have. This recent interception is part of a series of drug busts at Ahmedabad airport, highlighting the need for heightened surveillance and intelligence-driven operations to combat drug trafficking via air routes.
