Hyundai Motor India Limited revealed plans to introduce two new models, including its initial mass-market electric vehicle, from its Chennai plant this year. The company aims to boost electric vehicle adoption and enhance local production in India. They are dedicated to establishing Tamil Nadu as a key EV hub, investing in manufacturing, localizing components, and expanding charging infrastructure in major cities and highways over the next few years.
A network of high-capacity chargers will be strategically placed in urban and transit areas to facilitate affordable EV adoption nationwide. Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) and the Tamil Nadu government have partnered to enhance youth employability through a skill development program. This collaboration, set to commence in December 2027, will equip the workforce with skills aligned with the latest automotive technologies.
Managing Director and CEO of Hyundai Motor India Ltd, Tarun Garg, confirmed the launch of two new models, including the company’s first mass-market electric vehicle, from the Chennai facility this year. This move signifies a significant stride towards promoting electric vehicle usage and establishing a robust EV ecosystem in India. Garg emphasized the importance of workforce development alongside local EV manufacturing to ensure a skilled talent pool for upcoming mobility technologies.
Hyundai Motor India Limited highlighted its significant global presence by exporting over 3.9 million vehicles manufactured in Tamil Nadu to more than 150 countries. The company has established Tamil Nadu’s first battery sub-assembly plant for EV powertrains and is actively localizing critical components as part of its EV strategy.
