Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are currently inspecting the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine following a drone strike on Unit 6. The team observed damage to a metal access hatch and debris consistent with a drone impact. Despite nearby drone activity and gunfire, radiation levels at the site remain normal.
The IAEA team, during their examination, noted damage caused by the Ukrainian drone strike and requested access to further investigate inside the building. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi emphasized the seriousness of the incident, stressing the importance of nuclear safety.
The drone strike on the turbine building of Unit 6 resulted in an explosion that did not affect the main equipment but created a hole in the turbine wall. The attack, controlled via fiber optics, is the first targeted assault on a nuclear power plant’s core equipment in history, according to Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev.
