International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi confirmed that there was an initial exchange with Iranian officials regarding nuclear inspections. The discussions occurred at a technical level and took place in Burgenstock, Switzerland, over the weekend. Grossi mentioned that the IAEA would conduct inspections in Iran following the US-Iran peace memorandum of understanding.
A senior Iranian diplomat stated that Iran does not intend to grant the IAEA access to its nuclear facilities targeted by the US and Israel. The diplomat emphasized that such matters would be resolved within a potential final agreement with the US, contingent on the removal of all sanctions. US Vice President J.D. Vance announced that Iran had agreed to allow IAEA inspectors back into the country, marking a significant step in negotiations to halt Iran’s nuclear weapons program and ease tensions in the Middle East.
Following the talks in Burgenstock, Vance highlighted the agreement as a major achievement in negotiations involving the US, Iran, and regional partners. He expressed optimism that discussions between Iran and the IAEA could commence promptly, with potential conversations starting as early as the same day. Vance anticipated swift progress in the dialogue between the parties.
