Former West Indies cricketer Ian Bishop weighed in on the disputed catch involving Jason Holder and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Rajat Patidar during the IPL game against Gujarat Titans (GT). Bishop suggested that there was uncertainty in the decision and emphasized the need for a closer review before the final call.
In the eighth over of the first innings, Patidar, batting at 19, attempted a pull shot, which Holder caught at deep backward square leg. Despite RCB’s objections that Holder may not have had full control and the ball might have touched the ground, the umpires upheld the catch after a review. This decision led to Patidar being declared out, causing dissatisfaction among the RCB players.
Bishop highlighted the importance of assessing not just the catch but also the fielder’s control over the ball and body movement. He expressed doubt about the ruling, pointing out the need for clearer evidence to support the decision made on the field. The MCC’s laws of cricket state that a catch is valid only if the fielder has complete control over the ball and their own movement before it touches the ground.
