ICAR-Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (ICAR-IIOR) in Hyderabad has introduced a biopolymer-based Smart Seed Coating Technology to boost seed quality, crop growth, and yields. Demonstrations in Telangana showcased up to 30% higher yields in groundnut and soybean compared to traditional farming methods. This innovative technology enhances crop resilience against various stresses and elevates overall farm productivity.
The patented coating, utilizing biodegradable biopolymers, forms a protective layer around seeds. This layer serves as a carrier for beneficial microorganisms, nutrients, and other compounds, aiding in seed-soil interaction. By facilitating rapid germination, robust seedling growth, and improved root development, the coating enhances the seeds’ ability to withstand environmental pressures during the crucial initial growth phase.
Agriculture, facing challenges like climate change and resource depletion, benefits significantly from improved seed performance. Strengthening seeds during early growth stages emerges as a cost-effective strategy to enhance agricultural productivity. Field trials conducted under real farming conditions have exhibited notable enhancements in crop establishment, plant vigor, and overall productivity.
The Smart Seed Coating Technology has shown positive outcomes in various crops under different climatic conditions. Multi-location trials across crops like soybean, maize, groundnut, and others have consistently demonstrated improved seedling vigor, crop establishment, and yields. This technology holds particular importance for rainfed agriculture, a significant segment of India’s cultivated land vulnerable to climate uncertainties.
Customizable for a wide range of crops, including cereals, pulses, oilseeds, and vegetables, the technology offers a versatile solution for farmers. ICAR-IIOR scientists stress the increasing importance of technologies that enhance agricultural inputs’ efficiency. The institute is actively collaborating with public and private seed systems to scale up the dissemination and adoption of this technology.
