The International Cricket Council (ICC) expressed sorrow at the death of Sir Garfield Sobers, the legendary West Indies all-rounder, just before his 90th birthday. Sobers, known as one of the greatest all-rounders in cricket history, achieved unparalleled success with both bat and ball. He made history by being the first player to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket in 1968.
Jay Shah, ICC Chairman, described Sobers as a cricket icon and one of the finest all-rounders ever. Shah praised Sobers’ ability to impact every aspect of the game, highlighting his excellence with the bat, ball, and fielding. Sobers not only set records but also played a significant role in shaping West Indies cricket during a celebrated era.
Sobers, renowned as the best all-rounder of his time, was a versatile player excelling in batting, pace, spin bowling, and fielding. Making his first-class debut at 16, he set a Test record with a score of 365 not out at just 21. Over his two-decade international career starting in 1954, Sobers played 93 Test matches, scoring 26 centuries and 30 half-centuries. His legacy continues to inspire cricketers worldwide.
