The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, and Kanyakumari districts due to a low-pressure area forming over the northwestern Bay of Bengal. This weather system is expected to strengthen over the next two days, increasing the chances of widespread rainfall in various parts of Tamil Nadu.

According to the IMD’s weather bulletin, the newly formed low-pressure area is likely to intensify gradually, affecting weather conditions across the state. The western and southern districts of Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, and Kanyakumari are at risk of heavy rainfall, leading authorities to be on alert for potential waterlogging, localized flooding, and disruptions in vulnerable areas.

Apart from the heavy rain expected in these three districts, moderate rainfall is also forecasted for north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Other parts of Tamil Nadu are anticipated to receive light to moderate rainfall, offering relief from the prevailing warm weather in many regions.

The ongoing rainfall activity is attributed to the developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which is projected to become more organized in the next 48 hours. While the system is not anticipated to directly hit Tamil Nadu, its associated moisture and circulation are likely to enhance rainfall throughout the state.

Residents, especially those in low-lying and hilly areas, are advised by the IMD to stay informed about weather updates and exercise caution during heavy rainfall periods. Local authorities are urged to closely monitor the situation and implement necessary precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, maximum temperatures in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to be slightly below normal over the weekend due to increased cloud cover and widespread rainfall. This temporary relief from warm weather is welcomed in various parts of the state. The IMD will continue to monitor the progress of the low-pressure system closely and issue updated forecasts and warnings as the weather situation evolves.
