After a week of widespread rainfall in West Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a prolonged wet spell in south Bengal over the next few days. Heavy rain is likely in the coastal and western districts, with north Bengal also expecting heavy rainfall starting from Sunday.
Director Habibur Rahman Biswas from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata’s Alipore mentioned that the monsoon axis stretches from Bikaner in Rajasthan to the northeast Bay of Bengal over Midnapore. A cyclonic circulation above sea level will sustain the rainy conditions in Bengal.
A yellow alert for heavy rain is in place for south Bengal, with scattered showers expected in all districts. The intensity of rain may decrease slightly from Monday but heavy rain is anticipated again on Wednesday in coastal and adjacent districts. North Bengal is under a yellow alert for scattered light rain currently, with heavy rain expected from Sunday onwards.
According to the forecast, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, and Jhargram districts in south Bengal will experience heavy rain, while other districts may have scattered showers. In north Bengal, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Kalimpong are under a yellow alert for heavy rain starting Sunday.
Kolkata is likely to have light rain on Saturday, with decreasing precipitation later in the day. High humidity levels may persist despite the rainfall situation. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 29.06 degrees Celsius on Friday, below normal, with a minimum of 25.02 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels ranged from 90 to 98 per cent.
