The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in various parts of the Northeastern region, particularly Assam and Meghalaya. The forecast indicates widespread rainfall across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from June 22 to June 28, with the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning.
Additionally, Arunachal Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period. The IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds likely in northern India.
Parts of Meghalaya and Tripura have already experienced heavy showers, with further intense rainfall expected. Notably, Tripura’s capital, Agartala, received 102.5 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, leading to waterlogging and traffic disruptions. In Meghalaya, Mawsynram recorded 530 mm of rainfall in a day, equivalent to several months’ worth of rain in other regions.
The Southwest Monsoon arrived in the Northeastern region on June 7, bringing hopes for a normal-to-above-normal monsoon season. Despite delayed onset compared to last year, meteorological conditions are favorable for the monsoon’s progress. The IMD anticipates normal to above normal rainfall in the Northeast during the Southwest Monsoon season.
