The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a critical red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and neighboring districts as heavy monsoon rains continue for the fourth consecutive day. More than 100 mm of rainfall has been recorded in various areas within 24 hours, with authorities warning of a significant increase in intensity.
Citizens are strongly advised to stay indoors and only go out for essential purposes as heavy rainfall has led to immediate waterlogging in vulnerable areas. Suburban regions, particularly parts of Bandra and Chembur, are experiencing the highest precipitation, according to data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) rain-gauge stations.
Forecasters predict intense monsoon activity in Maharashtra until July 7, with high-risk areas expected to receive between 200 mm to 250 mm of torrential rain over the weekend. The red alert covers Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Satara, and Pune, with a specific focus on the vulnerable Ghat/mountain regions. Local authorities, including the civic administration, Fire Brigade, and Disaster Management Department, are on high alert to respond to any emergencies.
To ensure public safety, the BMC has prohibited access to all beaches and coastal areas, while urging people to avoid low-lying locations. The state administration has advised citizens to be vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel to waterlogged or ghat areas, and provided emergency helpline numbers for assistance.
