The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned that temperatures are set to increase in various districts in the upcoming days. Despite a cooling of the political climate in the state, health experts are warning about the growing risk of heat-related illnesses due to the rising mercury levels. They stress the importance of preventive actions to stay safe during the summer, including constant vigilance and regular consumption of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS).
The human body’s average temperature is approximately 36.9 degrees Celsius. When external temperatures surpass this level, the body absorbs heat from the environment, triggering cooling mechanisms like sweating and increased respiration. However, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can overwhelm these natural processes, leading to risks of dehydration and heat-related ailments.
Excessive sweating causes a significant loss of water, glucose, and essential salts, elevating the chances of dehydration. Without timely intervention, this can result in symptoms such as muscle cramps, dizziness, fatigue, and in severe cases, heatstroke and loss of consciousness. Medical professionals emphasize that dehydration can have adverse effects on vital organs, including the kidneys and heart.
Early signs of dehydration include a dry mouth, dark-colored urine, muscle cramps, weakness, and light-headedness. While adequate water intake is crucial, experts highlight that in extreme heat conditions, water alone may not suffice. Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) helps replenish lost electrolytes and maintain the body’s fluid balance more effectively.
According to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, a standard 20.5-gram ORS sachet contains sodium chloride, glucose, potassium chloride, and trisodium citrate. It should be dissolved in one liter of boiled and cooled water and consumed within 24 hours. With heatwave conditions expected to continue, authorities recommend avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, staying well-hydrated, and keeping ORS easily accessible to prevent severe health issues.
