The Income Tax Department in Kolkata recently seized a significant amount of foreign currency, leading to the detention of three individuals. During a raid in the Park Street police station area, approximately Rs five crore in Indian currency equivalent was confiscated. The operation resulted in the seizure of 4,75,000 US Dollars and 3,00,000 Thai Baht, totaling around Rs 4,54,82,500 in Indian currency.
Acting on a tip-off, Income Tax Department officials conducted the raid within the Park Street Police Station’s jurisdiction. The detained individuals were unable to provide proper documentation regarding the source of the funds, prompting further investigation. The three individuals are currently undergoing interrogation as per formal procedures.
Before the Assembly elections, the Election Commission engaged with various central government investigative agencies, including the Income Tax Department, to enhance vigilance over financial transactions and illicit activities. Just ahead of the elections, a substantial amount of foreign currency was seized in Kolkata, highlighting the active surveillance efforts in the region.
