External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated in the Rajya Sabha that Iran appreciated India’s permission for the Iranian warship IRIS Lavan to dock at Kochi port. Despite challenges in high-level communication with Iran, diplomatic engagement continues. Jaishankar mentioned speaking with Iran’s Foreign Minister Araghchi on February 20, 2026, and March 5, 2026.
The Iranian naval vessel’s docking in Kochi was explained by Jaishankar, highlighting India’s approval under specific circumstances. This occurred as the Iranian warship IRIS Dena sank near Sri Lanka, with another Iranian vessel seeking Indian assistance. The IRIS Lavan reported a technical issue, leading to its docking approval at Kochi port on March 1, 2026.
India’s decision to allow the IRIS Lavan to dock was based on Tehran’s urgent request due to technical problems. The vessel docked on March 4, 2026, with the crew currently in Indian Naval facilities. Jaishankar emphasized that this action was appreciated by the Iranian Foreign Minister as a humane gesture. The minister also addressed concerns regarding India’s energy security amidst West Asia’s instability.
