India and Canada engaged in detailed discussions covering various aspects such as trade in goods, services, intellectual property, and more as part of negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The second round of talks, held in New Delhi from May 4–8, concluded successfully, with plans for the next round in July in Ottawa.
Both countries expressed commitment to continuing negotiations in a positive manner, aiming for a balanced and beneficial agreement to enhance bilateral trade and economic relations. The talks align with the Terms of Reference signed by the Trade Ministers of India and Canada on March 2, emphasizing constructive engagement.
The discussions precede Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s upcoming visit to Canada to boost economic ties, with a target to increase bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030. Efforts are underway to expedite the talks for the CEPA, with a goal to finalize the agreement by the end of the year, as agreed by the Prime Ministers of both nations.
India and Canada are focused on strengthening their economic partnership, with a particular emphasis on enhancing trade relations and collaboration in key sectors. The leaders aim to establish a comprehensive trade framework to support the shared goal of expanding bilateral trade significantly by 2030.
