India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh K. Patnaik, highlighted the significant shift in relations between India and Canada, describing the transition from an “antagonistic” phase to an “extremely friendly” one. This positive change has led to enhanced collaboration among security agencies, political leadership, and businesses from both countries. The upcoming visit of Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, accompanied by over 100 Indian businessmen, signifies the beginning of a new phase in bilateral ties.
Patnaik emphasized the importance of Goyal’s visit in boosting economic engagement and advancing negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The delegation’s focus is on elevating the economic and commercial relationship between India and Canada, with a goal to double bilateral trade over the next five years. Both nations aim to reach a trade value of around 50 billion US dollars by 2030 or 2031.
The High Commissioner underscored the restoration of cooperation across various sectors, particularly in security matters. Efforts are being made to ensure mutual safety and combat shared challenges. Patnaik also addressed issues related to extremist elements and criminal networks, emphasizing the need to address these concerns collaboratively. He identified key growth sectors such as energy, critical minerals, AgriFood, AI, quantum research, and defense cooperation.
