India and Cuba recently marked the 66th anniversary of their diplomatic ties, emphasizing their commitment to enhancing cooperation based on mutual respect and solidarity. The two nations established diplomatic relations in 1960, with India being one of the first Asian countries to recognize the Cuban Revolution. Over the years, high-level interactions, including visits by iconic figures like Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, and India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, have strengthened the relationship.
Bilateral engagement between India and Cuba gained momentum last year, with significant events such as a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel during the BRICS Summit in Brazil. The exchanges also involved visits by Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Eduardo Martínez Díaz to India and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita to Cuba, leading to agreements aimed at enhancing legal and cultural cooperation.
India plays a crucial role in Cuba’s pharmaceutical sector, with both countries exploring collaboration opportunities in various fields such as biotechnology, IT, tourism, agriculture, energy, and mining. The partnership has also expanded to capacity building, with Cuban professionals participating in ITEC programs and new initiatives focusing on healthcare, traditional medicine, and disaster response.
Academic, cultural, sports, and renewable energy cooperation further solidified the bilateral ties between India and Cuba in the past year. Both nations expressed optimism about the partnership’s growth in the future, especially with India’s upcoming BRICS Chairship in 2026, which is expected to open new avenues for engagement.
In a show of solidarity, India extended support to Cuba following the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa by delivering around 20 tonnes of Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) materials to Havana in November. This gesture, guided by the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, aimed to assist in the recovery efforts and underscored the enduring bonds of friendship and humanitarian cooperation between the two countries.
