The State Visit of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides to India concluded with both countries announcing an upgrade in bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership. This move is aimed at enhancing cooperation in diplomacy, trade, education, and security between New Delhi and Nicosia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the partnership as “strong and futuristic,” emphasizing shared democratic values during the visit.
President Christodoulides departed from New Delhi after a successful State Visit, with Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways, Shri Ajay Tamta seeing him off. The elevation of bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership was a significant outcome of the visit, marking a new chapter in India–Cyprus relations. PM Modi highlighted the growing investment linkages between the two nations and expressed optimism about strengthening trade and economic ties in the future.
Key outcomes of the bilateral discussions included agreements on establishing a Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism and cooperation between the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service and Cyprus’ Diplomatic Academy. Additionally, collaboration in higher education and research was also on the agenda, reflecting the shared commitment to deepening ties. President Christodoulides and PM Modi shared a friendly moment during the visit, capturing a selfie at Hyderabad House, symbolizing the warmth and camaraderie between the two leaders.
President Christodoulides paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat before engaging in official activities in the national capital, further underscoring the significance of the visit in strengthening the bond between Cyprus and India.
