India and Indonesia have signed an agreement for the supply of BrahMos missiles to the Indonesian military, marking a significant development for the domestic defence industry. Additionally, Indonesia is set to import India’s Astra air-to-air missiles, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), known for its capability to track and destroy highly manoeuvrable enemy aircraft.
Moreover, India is expected to provide Indonesia with additional batteries of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. The two countries have also finalized a framework for maritime safety and security cooperation, enhancing their strategic ties in defense and security matters.
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Indonesia, the first stop of his three-nation tour, agreements were reached to boost defense exchanges, disaster management, and industrial cooperation. PM Modi highlighted the strengthening trust between the two nations, emphasizing the importance of defense, security, and maritime collaboration.
India and Indonesia have also signed agreements on minerals and technologies for the steel supply chain, aiming to reinforce critical mineral supply chains. Furthermore, India is poised to assist in the development of Indonesia-specific Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), showcasing its expertise in poll technology to support the Southeast Asian nation.
In a gesture of recognition, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto bestowed PM Modi with the country’s highest honor, the ‘Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia’. This prestigious civilian and military medal of honor, established in 1959, acknowledges extraordinary service and adds to the series of highest honors conferred upon PM Modi globally.
