Highlighting the enduring cultural bonds between India and Laos, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the shared Buddhist heritage and the influence of the Ramayana on both nations. During the 10th India-Lao PDR Joint Commission Meeting in New Delhi, Jaishankar mentioned the deep-rooted civilizational ties that have historically connected the two countries.
Recalling his visit to Laos during their ASEAN chairship in 2024, Jaishankar expressed gratitude for the warm reception and highlighted the significant agreements signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Laos in the same year. The discussions at the meeting aimed to explore various aspects of cooperation, including political, economic, defense, and cultural ties between India and Laos.
Jaishankar also commended Thongsavanh Phomvihane, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Laos, on the successful conduct of the country’s National Assembly elections earlier in the year. Phomvihane’s visit to India marked a milestone in the 70-year diplomatic relationship between the two nations, fostering deeper collaboration and mutual interests.
