India and Myanmar emphasized the need to prevent the misuse of sovereign territory for activities that threaten their security interests. During a meeting at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi, Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing reassured Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Myanmar’s territory would not be used against India’s security concerns. Both leaders highlighted the significance of supporting peace, stability, and development efforts in Myanmar.
The joint statement released after the meeting revealed PM Modi’s affirmation of India’s backing for Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also pledged continued assistance and cooperation to Myanmar based on mutual respect and friendly relations. President Hlaing acknowledged India’s constructive support and cooperation during the discussions.
The leaders discussed the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation in various areas such as trade, defense, security, border management, development assistance, and cultural exchanges. They also highlighted the progress in ongoing discussions on bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding, anticipating their early finalization. PM Modi emphasized the role of enhanced connectivity in promoting economic linkages and shared prosperity in the region.
PM Modi announced an increase in Mekong Ganga Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarships for Myanmar students from 36 to 100 starting in 2026. President U Min Aung Hlaing’s visit to India, his first since assuming office, includes engagements in Mumbai for business interactions and site visits. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising cabinet ministers, senior officials, and business leaders.
