The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the potential for increased cooperation between India and Romania in defense manufacturing. Secretary Sibi George emphasized the opportunities for collaboration in defense technologies, industrial partnerships, maritime security, and cyber security. The two countries are looking to strengthen their defense ties, with a focus on joint projects and technology sharing.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed gratitude to Romania for its assistance during the evacuation of Indian students from Ukraine under ‘Operation Ganga’ in 2022. The visit saw the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), including one on science and technology cooperation for 2026-29. Additionally, an MoU on sports cooperation was inked between the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of India and the National Sports Agency of Romania.
During discussions, President Murmu and Romanian officials addressed the global fight against terrorism. Romania’s support for India in combating terrorism, particularly condemning the Pahalgam terror attack, was acknowledged. The visit also explored potential collaborations in areas such as Unified Payments Interface (UPI) adoption, sports training, and participation in multilateral initiatives led by India.
President Murmu engaged with Romanian parliamentary leaders and the India-Romania Parliamentary Friendship Group, emphasizing the importance of strengthening parliamentary ties between the two nations. The visit aims to deepen the partnership between India and Romania through various avenues, including parliamentary interactions and community engagements.
