India and the UK engaged in discussions to enhance cooperation in Artificial Intelligence (AI), emerging technologies, research, and innovation. They also explored leveraging the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement to create new opportunities, promote innovation, and boost mutual economic growth.
The meeting between India’s High Commissioner to the UK, P Kumaran, and UK’s Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology’s Permanent Secretary, Emran Mian, facilitated these discussions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently announced that the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will come into effect on July 15, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations.
The CETA is expected to strengthen bilateral ties and investments between India and the UK. PM Modi emphasized that this agreement will benefit various sectors including farmers, workers, MSMEs, startups, and innovators, contributing to the realization of Viksit Bharat 2047. The Prime Minister expressed his satisfaction with the progress in economic relations, especially during the G7 Summit in Evian.
In a separate meeting, India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper reviewed the progress in bilateral cooperation. They focused on areas such as trade, technology, supply chains, defense, climate, education, and people-to-people ties. The leaders also exchanged views on global developments, including regions like Ukraine, West Asia, and the Indo-Pacific.
