India and the United States are close to finalizing a long-awaited bilateral trade agreement, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Rubio emphasized that the agreement would be beneficial, sustainable, and in line with the national interests of both countries. Despite past trade-related differences, the broader India-US strategic partnership is progressing positively.
Rubio’s comments came after extensive discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his official visit to India. The talks centered on enhancing cooperation in key areas such as trade, critical minerals, energy security, and defense collaboration. This visit is seen as crucial for strengthening economic ties following tensions over tariffs and trade policies.
The US diplomat expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations, stating that significant progress has been made. Rubio believes that the trade agreement between the US and India will be enduring and mutually beneficial while addressing national interests. He clarified that the trade imbalances issue is not specific to India but part of a broader effort to create a fair global trading system.
Rubio highlighted the importance of the US-India partnership in various areas, including counterterrorism, mineral security, supply chain resilience, and technology development. As negotiations near completion, an American trade delegation is set to visit India soon to finalize the agreement. The proposed pact aims to enhance market access, bolster supply chains, and create new business opportunities for both nations.
