India and the United States are gearing up for crucial discussions on a proposed interim trade deal. Senior officials from the US Trade Representative’s Office will be in New Delhi on June 23-24 for high-level talks to finalize the initial phase of the agreement. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal mentioned that the focus will be on concluding the first part of the deal and advancing negotiations on a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).
The upcoming visit follows earlier talks held in June, where discussions covered various aspects of the trade pact. Both countries are expected to concentrate on trade in goods, non-tariff measures, customs and trade facilitation, economic security alignment, and other mutual interests during the negotiations. In February, India and the US outlined a framework for an interim agreement based on reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade, reaffirming their commitment to continue working on a comprehensive bilateral trade deal.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor recently stated that the India-US trade agreement is almost finalized, with just a few remaining issues to resolve. He emphasized that officials from both sides are actively involved in discussions and are determined to reach an agreement beneficial for both nations. The forthcoming USTR visit is anticipated to inject fresh momentum into the negotiations, bringing India and the US closer to sealing the trade deal.
