India’s Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that it has consistently respected China’s sovereignty but pointed out that China has unlawfully occupied Indian territories in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh since 1963. The Ministry reiterated its objection to Chinese infrastructure projects in these regions, stating that India has valid reasons to raise concerns over sovereignty.
During a media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted India’s stance on the issue following a statement by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The Chinese Foreign Ministry had mentioned India’s respect for China’s sovereignty and the positive bilateral relationship during a meeting between the External Affairs Minister of India and China’s Foreign Minister in Manila.
Addressing sovereignty concerns, Jaiswal clarified that India does not infringe on China’s sovereignty and has consistently raised legitimate issues. He pointed out that China’s illegal occupation of Indian territories in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has been acknowledged by China itself. India also objected to Chinese projects on Indian territories in these regions.
During a meeting with China’s Foreign Minister, EAM Jaishankar emphasized the importance of peace and tranquility in border areas for normal ties between India and China. He acknowledged China’s support for BRICS activities and initiatives under India’s presidency. Jaishankar highlighted the need for constant attention to maintaining peace along the border and the importance of supporting relevant mechanisms in this regard.
Welcoming steps towards normalization, including the resumption of direct flights and border trade, the External Affairs Minister underscored the significance of managing differences between the two nations. He stressed the responsibility of diplomacy in ensuring that differences do not escalate into disputes.
