India has been added to the list of countries permitted to export aquaculture products, eggs, honey, and animal casings to the European Union beyond September 2026. This decision comes under an amended EU regulatory framework aimed at addressing concerns related to antimicrobial resistance. The revised regulation, known as Regulation (EU) 2021/405, will be effective from September 2026 and introduces additional requirements for countries exporting specific animal-origin products to the EU market.
The Ministry of Commerce & Industry stated that India’s inclusion in the authorized countries list ensures the uninterrupted export of these animal-origin products to the EU market post-September 2026. This development holds particular significance for the fisheries sector, given that India’s exports of fish and fishery products to the European Union are currently valued at around $1.59 billion.
The Department of Commerce, in collaboration with the Export Inspection Council (EIC) and other stakeholders, has played a crucial role in securing this clearance. The statement highlighted the sustained efforts of these entities in ensuring compliance with the EU regulatory framework and addressing market access issues.
The amended EU regulation will enable Indian exporters to maintain their market access, foster trade expansion, and create new opportunities in the relevant sectors. The Ministry emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the Department of Commerce, Export Inspection Council, Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), and EU-approved establishments to ensure the smooth implementation of regulatory requirements and uphold high standards of quality and food safety in exported products.
