Abhishek Sharma’s impressive 84 runs, Rinku Singh’s unbeaten 44, and Varun Chakaravarthy and Shivam Dube’s two wickets each led India to a 48-run victory over New Zealand in the T20I series opener at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur. Abhishek Sharma’s aggressive 84 off 35 balls, including five fours and eight sixes, along with Rinku Singh’s quick 44 not out, guided India to a formidable total of 238/7 after being put to bat.
India’s strong batting display also saw contributions from Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, who scored 32 and 25 runs respectively. In response, New Zealand’s chase was anchored by Glenn Phillips’ 78 off 40 balls and Mark Chapman’s 39 off 24 balls. However, despite their efforts, New Zealand fell short, finishing at 190/7 in their 20 overs as India took a 1-0 lead in the series.
Apart from Chakaravarthy and Dube, bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya also made crucial breakthroughs. Jasprit Bumrah, making a return, struggled with form, while Axar Patel’s injury added a concern for India. The match showcased India’s aggressive batting approach, with players like Abhishek Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav leading the charge with their attacking shots.
