The India-European Union (EU) free trade agreement provides entry to the $572.3 billion EU pharmaceuticals and medical devices market, offering a significant boost to the Indian pharmaceutical sector. The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers highlights that this agreement will facilitate the growth of pharmaceutical industries, leading to job creation and reinforcing India’s reputation as a dependable player in the pharmaceutical domain, solidifying its position as the world’s pharmacy.

The agreement is anticipated to create more skilled jobs, enhance industrial employment, increase Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) participation, and promote the integration of global supply chains, according to the ministry. Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers, JP Nadda, expressed that the FTA presents new opportunities for the pharmaceutical and medical devices sectors. Nadda emphasized that access to the $572.3 billion Pharma and MedTech market in the EU, along with reduced tariffs for Indian medical devices, will drive growth in this high-value sector.

Minister Nadda further stated that, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India is expanding its role as a trustworthy global partner in healthcare and manufacturing. The free trade agreement marks a significant milestone in one of India’s key economic partnerships, designed to foster a modern, rules-based trade relationship that addresses current global challenges while promoting deeper market integration between the world’s fourth and second-largest economies.

The FTA will provide preferential market access to accelerate growth in high-value segments, liberalize tariffs for essential ‘Made In India’ medical devices, promote growth in various sectors including inorganic and organic chemicals, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, soaps, and detergents, and facilitate capacity expansion and MSME cluster development to drive sectoral growth. Additionally, it will unlock growth opportunities in key regions like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, enabling coastal export hubs to expand export-led growth and support employment in processing-intensive sectors.

The India-EU FTA is seen as reinforcing shared values, encouraging innovation, and establishing a foundation for inclusive, resilient, and future-ready growth for both India and Europe, as per the ministry’s statement.
