India is preparing to establish itself as a significant player in the worldwide seaweed industry, with plans to be outlined at the 7th India International Seaweed Expo & Summit in Kochi on January 29–30. The event, organized by the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), aims to promote cooperation, technology transfer, and sustainable growth in the seaweed sector.
Key officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and other Central government departments are anticipated to participate, underscoring the increasing policy emphasis on seaweed as a promising sector with substantial commercial and environmental benefits. The summit will feature high-level technical sessions and panel discussions covering various crucial topics such as policy frameworks, financing mechanisms, value-chain optimization, commercial cultivation, innovations, and environmental sustainability.
Delegates from several countries including the US, Russia, Australia, France, and others will convene at the summit to exchange knowledge and engage in investment dialogues. Apart from policy and scientific discussions, the Expo will function as a significant networking platform for businesses, investors, and entrepreneurs to explore collaborations and opportunities within the seaweed value chain.
The event, jointly organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), CMFRI, and the CSIR-Central Salt Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI), will exhibit industrial innovations and interactive exhibitions. Attendees will have the chance to sample seaweed-based products like health supplements, functional foods, cosmetics, and lifestyle items, highlighting the industry’s role in food security, sustainable livelihoods, and environmental sustainability.
International experts, investors, and policymakers coming together in Kochi are expected to pave the way for India’s emergence as a major player in the global seaweed economy, which is valued in billions of dollars.
