India Inc is looking into investment prospects in South Africa’s Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to enhance economic ties with a vital logistics and manufacturing hub in Africa. The Dube TradePort SEZ, uniquely integrated with King Shaka International Airport, offers a significant advantage for export-oriented industries, as per a report by South Africa-based IOL. This development is strategically important for India as companies aim to expand their presence in Africa.
Key sectors like pharmaceuticals, automotive components, agro-processing, and electronics, where Indian exports excel, are poised to benefit from the SEZ’s advanced infrastructure and proximity to global markets. Notably, Indian companies already have a strong presence in the zone, with Mahindra Group operating a vehicle assembly unit and Cipla Limited running manufacturing operations through its subsidiary Cipla Medpro.
The investments made by Indian companies have not only strengthened bilateral trade relations but also fostered local job creation and skills development, aligning with India’s broader economic diplomacy in Africa. However, the Indian industry is keeping a close watch on the China-Africa Economic Partnership Agreement (CAEPA) signed earlier this year, which could impact trade dynamics in sectors like minerals and agro-products, potentially affecting India’s competitive edge.
Dube TradePort presents an opportunity for India to deepen its commercial connections with South Africa amidst a fiercely competitive global trade landscape. With incentives such as a reduced corporate tax rate of 15%, the SEZ’s logistics-focused ecosystem, customs-controlled areas, and readily available industrial land are increasingly attracting global investors, including Indian firms. Since its establishment in 2017, the Dube TradePort SEZ has emerged as one of the country’s most successful industrial zones, leveraging its airport-linked infrastructure to drive exports. The approved expansion is set to increase the SEZ’s capacity for export-driven manufacturing by approximately 752 hectares.
