Former Indian off-spin veteran Ravichandran Ashwin reminisced about his initial days with Chennai Super Kings, recalling his surprise when the team signed Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan in 2009. Ashwin, a 39-year-old from Chennai, started his career with the franchise, winning two titles before being acquired by CSK for 9.75 crores in the 2025 auctions.
He acknowledged VB Chandrasekhar, his late mentor, for facilitating his selection in CSK, expressing gratitude for the opportunities provided. Ashwin shared how he initially doubted his chances after Muralitharan’s recruitment but impressed during a crucial match, leading to his eventual inclusion in the team.
Reflecting on his IPL journey with CSK, Ashwin expressed his desire to finish his career where it all began but acknowledged the twists that unfolded. Despite concluding his IPL stint in Delhi, he cherished the idea of ending at Chepauk, a ground close to his heart with numerous memorable moments.
Ashwin wrapped up his IPL career as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the league, having taken 187 wickets in 221 matches at an economy rate of 7.2. Apart from CSK, he played for other franchises like Rising Pune Supergiant, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals, and captained Kings XI Punjab, now Punjab Kings, in the IPL. With 833 runs and a strike rate of 118, including a half-century, Ashwin showcased his all-round capabilities in the tournament.
