India has taken steps to create its own high-speed train for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai route, issuing a tender to a state-owned defense manufacturer for design, production, and long-term maintenance of the rolling stock. The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) awarded the tender to BEML Limited, a public sector company under the Ministry of Defence, in line with the nation’s self-reliance goals.
This initiative signifies a shift towards domestic capabilities in high-speed rail technology, encompassing the entire train lifecycle from design and manufacturing to testing, commissioning, and maintenance. The move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to boost local manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports, particularly evident in the ongoing Ahmedabad-Mumbai high-speed rail project.
BEML Limited is tasked with ensuring that the trains meet operational requirements for the high-speed corridor and are well-maintained in the long run. With expertise spanning defense, railways, energy, mining, and infrastructure sectors, the company aims to contribute significantly to the development of indigenous high-speed rail technology.
The Ahmedabad-Mumbai high-speed rail corridor, covering 508 km, is currently under construction, with a major portion in Gujarat and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and the rest in Maharashtra. The route will feature 12 stations, including key stops like Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, and Mumbai, enhancing connectivity and transportation efficiency in the region.
The tender issuance coincides with discussions on infrastructure and investment at the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference, highlighting the state’s focus on industrial growth. Additionally, the Union Budget for 2026-27 has outlined plans for seven more high-speed rail corridors across the country, aiming to bolster sustainable passenger transport and regional connectivity.
