External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar initiated India’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028–29 term, emphasizing New Delhi’s vision for a more inclusive and effective global order. Jaishankar highlighted the pressing global challenges and urged for stronger leadership from the UN and its security body to address escalating conflict and instability worldwide. India’s campaign, rooted in SHANTI (Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust, and Integrity), aims to amplify the Global South’s voice in international peace and security matters.
Following the launch, Jaishankar unveiled India’s campaign on X, emphasizing a commitment to enhancing the Global South’s influence in global governance and fostering dialogue, cooperation, and unity among nations. India’s strategy focuses on advancing a future-ready UN peacekeeping framework, championing the Women, Peace, and Security agenda, and advocating for a human-centric approach to artificial intelligence.
Jaishankar also underscored India’s dedication to promoting a rules-based maritime order, combatting terror financing, and supporting transparent sanctions based on credible evidence. Emphasizing the necessity for a reformed and representative Security Council, Jaishankar positioned India’s UNSC bid as a step towards a more inclusive and responsive global governance structure.
