Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu inaugurated India’s first ‘Easy Connect’ flight from Varanasi, introducing the government’s new hub-and-spoke aviation model. This model aims to enhance international connectivity for passengers from Tier-II and Tier-III cities. The flight took off from Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi, a significant step towards improving air travel accessibility for residents of smaller cities.
The initiative is part of India’s efforts to establish itself as a global aviation hub and simplify overseas travel for passengers originating from Tier-II and Tier-III cities. Minister Naidu emphasized that this new model will allow passengers from smaller cities to commence their international journeys from their local airports, streamlining the travel process.
Minister Naidu highlighted that the ‘Easy Connect’ initiative is a crucial move towards creating a competitive and future-ready aviation ecosystem. This approach will enable passengers to complete check-in, immigration, and customs procedures at their departure airport. For instance, passengers from Varanasi will finalize all formalities before boarding a domestic flight to a hub airport like Delhi, connecting seamlessly to international flights without repeating the processes.
The government’s vision is to position India as the preferred aviation hub for Indian travelers by 2030 and a global aviation hub by 2047 through the ‘Easy Connect’ initiative. This strategy aims to enhance trade, tourism, investment, and regional economic development by enhancing international connectivity from non-metro cities. The Ministry of Civil Aviation estimates that aviation hub development could create approximately 0.4 million direct and indirect jobs and contribute an extra $30 billion to India’s GDP by 2030. By 2047, this initiative is projected to support around 16 million jobs and add nearly $1.4 trillion to the economy.
